Woman Was About To Toss Old Doors, Creates Gorgeous Sliding DIY TV Cover Instead

Do you have a couple of old wooden doors lying around? Instead of tossing them out, transform them into a gorgeous, sliding television cover in just a few easy steps.
Sarah, the blogger over at Little Vintage Nest, came up with this super simple DIY project after becoming inspired by Liz Marie Blog. Her recreation of the project creates an absolutely stunning focal point for a living or bedroom. Plus, it’s functional!

For this project, you’re going to need the following tools and supplies:

  • Two wooden doors
  • (4) 1-inch eye hooks
  • 1×4 piece of wood to the length of your choosing
  • (2) 4-foot pieces of galvanized pipe
  • (3) 3/4-inch black galvanized flanges
  • (3) 6-inch pieces of galvanized pipe
  • 1 pipe tee & 2 elbow pieces
  • Screws
  • Saw
  • Power drill with screw attachment

Optional supplies:

  • Paint/paintbrush
  • Handles
  • Decor/wreath

It might sound like a lot of supplies to work with, but don’t get intimidated – it’s so much easier to do than you think!

Your first step is cutting the door panels to your desired length.

Using a saw or power saw, cut the lower half of each door to a size that will cover the length of your television. Make each door panel the identical length and width. Keep in mind that these measurements will be based on the size of your television and how long you want the sliding rod to be (more on this below).

Next, it’s time to screw in the eye hooks.

Screw two 1-inch eye hook into the top of each door panel. Be sure to place one on each end, as these will be the hooks that will hang the doors up so they can slide across the bar.

Next, you’ll need to mount the pipe to the wall using the long 1×4.

Screw the long 1×4 onto the wall (into the studs) at the desired height and placement that you’d like to place the rod. This step is very important because it will make the rod and doors secure so they don’t fall.

Now, it’s time to assemble and mount the pipe to the wall.

For this next step, it might seem to be the most complicated, but it’s really not! Just think of it as a bit of a puzzle. Screw and mount the center flange first – piece the pipe together from here. You’ll need a helping hand or two for this one! Before screwing in the left and right flanges, slide the door panels onto the rod.

Start on one side, installing the right or left flange, then work your way to the other. Then you’re done!

Surprisingly easy, right? Now – it’s just time to personalize and decorate your new sliding barn door-style TV cover. Feel free to paint them whichever color you’d like, add handles, and hang a wreath or piece of decor of your choosing. Little Vintage Nest even left the old door hinges on for a bit of added character.

Get creative!

It’s up to you how long you want the pipe to be; you can have it just so the doors slide to the side of the television, or you can have the pipe span the length of an entire wall. Think about the look you want to have when the doors are closed and the TV is hidden.
