How To Create a Monochromatic Color Scheme in a Room

If you’re planning a little bit of home redecorating, one of the best and most efficient ways of doing this is by doing it one room at a time. Not only will this help you better control your budget, this will also help you decide on a starting point for the rest of your house’s design as well. Deciding on a color scheme is one of first things you’d have to do, but good thing is that this is one of the most fun, as well. A monochromatic scheme is one of the most popular color styles that you could use, and here are some guidelines for upping the ante on this classic look:

  • Know what a monochromatic color scheme is. A monochromatic scheme refers to using just one color – but in varying hues and tones – in decorating a room. This color scheme gives a feeling of tasteful elegance, plus you can hardly ever go wrong with a monochromatic design. It’s very important though, that added interest be placed strategically throughout the room because a monochromatic scheme tends to be boring if not well-planned out.
  • Determine the color that you will use. Remember, one color will be used as the major backdrop of the room so it’s important that you choose the color well. It doesn’t have to be your favorite color: what is more important is to consider the mood that your chosen color conveys. For example, blue promotes relaxation and calm; orange promotes energy; and cream conveys a feeling of purity. It’s recommended that you use a main color that isn’t too bold and can work as a neutral: too-bold colors can be too tiring to the eyes after awhile.
  • Use the main color on the largest surface area. Think of the main color that you will use (the exact shade, hue and value) and then use this as the springboard for the entire room’s design. Use this main color on the largest surface area of your room, such as the walls. Then, choose a similar color but in varying hues to complement this main color.
  • Use different textures. To give added interest to your room, make sure that you integrate varying textures in the items that you use. With the smooth, solid backdrop of your walls, for example, the surfaces of a soft leather sofa, an Afghan rug and an oak table will help give added appeal to the design.
  • Determine an accent color. To breathe more life into your room, integrate a vivid hue with the same intensity as your main color and complementary to it (for example: canary yellow to a light blue color scheme). Use this accent color in small amounts and in various areas of the room. An alternative to a complementary color is to use an analogous color (such as blue and green, orange and red, etc) as accent.

There you have it! These are just some of the guidelines for creating a monochromatic color scheme in your room. As with any other type of color scheme, it’s very important to plan out the little details; with these guidelines, hopefully you’d have more fun with planning! Good luck, and hope this helped!
