Kitchen Renovations on a Budget

Whether you want to invest sweat and manpower into a complete kitchen overhaul or are simply hoping to make some quick changes over a long weekend, every penny counts when you decide to tackle kitchen renovations. It's important to pick projects that are going to make a big impact for the least amount of money possible. As long as you're willing to get your hands a little dirty, you can achieve beautiful results on any budget. Read on for some suggestions on how to update and improve your kitchen on a limited budget.

Change Out Lighting

Replacing dated fixtures or unseemly neon lights with stylish new pendant lights can update your space and become the new focal point of the room. These lights can be purchased at many different home stores and rarely cost over $200.

Replace Old Hardware

Changing outdated hardware is a worthwhile upgrade that can subtly enhance the look of a space. Start by counting the number of pulls and knobs in your kitchen so that you can determine if the style of hardware you're interested in will fit in your budget. Lots of beautiful drawer pulls are under $10 each. If you have tons of drawers and cabinets, however, this could add up. Just do some simple math to see if you can do this remodel for a reasonable price.

Repaint Cabinets

Whether your cabinets are outdated or you just want to add a more personal touch than standard-issue white, adding a pop of color into your cabinetry is one of the easier kitchen renovations. Try using a versatile paint color that will go with many different materials, finishes, and table settings, like soft, pale green, warm putty, or an egg blue.

Add Sconces

Sconces placed above open shelving provide beautiful ambient light and offer more personality than the typical recessed or track lighting. You might have to outsource to an electrician to have these installed so that the wires are not visible. If you do the work yourself, you may be able to use plug-in versions and cord covers to hide dangling cords.

Paint the Floor

Whether you have wood floors that have seen better days or vinyl tile you absolutely hate, you can avoid professional refinishing by painting them instead. White can be very chic but makes frequent cleaning a necessity, so consider pale blue or gray. You can even get creative and stencil a design onto the floor, or add in a classic checkerboard or diamond pattern.

Remove Upper Cabinet Doors

Glass front doors are currently all the rage in cabinetry, but replacing all of your cabinets can get expensive pretty quickly. For the same look, consider simply removing the doors to your upper kitchen cabinets. This will open up a bit of space that really impacts a small kitchen. All you need to do is remove the doors and paint in any holes.

We spend a lot of time in our kitchens, so we need to make sure that they're rooms we enjoy being in. With a little bit of elbow grease and some creativity, you can achieve beautiful and affordable kitchen renovations.
