How To Make Your Bedroom a Little Bit of You

Without a doubt, the bedroom is the most personal room in your home. It’s where you comfortably sleep, relax at the end of the day, and is a respite from the pressures and stresses of the day-to-day world. This special place deserves special recognition and should not be thrown together with a hodgepodge of décor that, instead of helping you to relax and unwind, dissatisfies you or even worse, adds more stress to your life.
However, designing and decorating can be a challenge. Most of us are not interior designers. In fact, we’ve probably never had to design anything in our entire lives. So when it comes to creating that special room that is a reflection of our personality, the process may seem a bit daunting. The good news is that there is a wealth of information out there to help you; from the Internet to décor TV networks, you can get a lot of great ideas that you can translate to fit your space and style. And don’t overlook tried and true resources: Décor magazines and catalogs that show you in a few pictures how a room can be put together. Even if you can afford high-end furniture and accessories you can copy the look with affordable versions of key pieces that express the style of the room.
A few ideas to keep in mind when getting started:

Step 1

1) Plan ahead
What exactly do you want to see in your bedroom? Of course, you’d like to see yourself in there, but what precisely does this mean? You may enjoy fashion or music, but how do you express this?
While you can have a huge variety of interests, they may not translate into décor so well. The best choice is to pick a theme for your bedroom. This can mean different things for different people. You could just love blue, so you feature the color. Try to define the style that makes you feel most at home. For some people, this might be a streamlined modern look, and for others it may be Mediterranean or American country. Regardless of your chosen style or theme, be consistent to avoiding any clashing colors and styles.

Step 2

2) Build around the major pieces of furniture
You’ll, of course, have a bed, but will you have side tables? How about wardrobe, dressers or TV?
These pieces will be the foundation of the rest of the room. Make sure these go together and they fit in with the theme that you’ve chosen. For example, picking high-gloss modern black furniture, when you were planning on tropical wall décor, would be a poor decision. Instead, choose a warm exotic wood like bamboo. Likewise, if you’re looking for a sleek and modern theme, choose woods that are minimalist in design and have a glossy finish.

Step 3

3) Add your personality to the room
Once your theme and major pieces are chosen, you’ll want to add that extra touch of personality that defines your style. You can do this by choosing wall art that ties into your theme and speaks to your heart; you can mix and match newer pieces with vintage pieces; you can create your own art or you can mix in pieces that have sentimental value to you, such as a decorative pillow or painting that belonged to a favorite aunt. The point is to use accents that you absolutely love. Well-chosen accessories will reflect who you are and say something about your history, your interests and your sense of style.
